Visiting Venice, 2008

Published by at 2:52 pm under Venice

This was the eighth year that my friends and I visited Venezia. I stay a little longer and enjoy it more each year. My usual plan is to start each day with a light breakfast at the pensione, visit a museum and a couple of churches in the morning, have a light lunch, take a boat ride or two on the vaporetti in the afternoon, meet friends in the garden for an apperitivo and then on to a leisurely dinner. In case it is not yet clear, food plays a big part in the enjoyment of my time in Venice.

I do not understand the travel writers who complain of the difficulty of finding a good meal in Venice. I also find that the US press is filled with articles about very expensive restaurants. With the current US$ vs euro rate, expensive restaurants become extremely expensive.

My favorite destination lunch is Ca’ Vignotto on Sant’Erasmo. Using public transport (vaporetto, Line 13 from Fondamenta Nuove) and walking (straight down the road from the vaporetto stop Sant’Erasmo, La Chiesa to the other side of the island and a left turn for a short distance), the restaurant takes a bit of time to get to but is well worth it. This year there was a waitress who spoke English, so comprehending Italian has become less necessary. The diner is offered red or white wine and still or sparkling water to start. All food varies with the season and features the fresh vegetables grown on Sant’Erasmo as well as the fish from the neighboring waters. Lunch is comprised of antipasti (several small portions of fish, shellfish and vegetables), a pasta dish (usually 2 different delectable preparations), a main course served with my favorites in season — artichokes and fried zucchini blossoms — and a dessert course of cake and/or fruit and coffee. The cost, the last time we were there, was 25 euro per person.

More reviews and tips will follow.

I have a request. Could you have a print version without pictures. I have just copied and edited the blog to take with us. Also how about a separate section on restrauant? I will report back.
